| The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Pneumococcal Disease Prevention in the Developing World has been formed in response to the urgent need to improve child survival and tackle the devastating impact of pneumococcal disease in the developing world.
Pneumococcal disease is the leading infectious cause of child mortality worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, pneumococcal pneumonia, meningitis and sepsis are responsible for 1.6 million deaths each year, including up to 1 million children. More than 90% of pneumococcal pneumonia deaths in children occur in developing countries. Many of these deaths could be prevented with the use of a vaccine.
The All-Party Parliamentary Group members will work to raise awareness amongst their colleagues nationally, across Europe and across the world about pneumococcal disease, its prevention through vaccination, and international efforts to ensure sustainable financing for vaccination. The group’s activities will complement the already extensive work undertaken by HM Treasury on the development of a pilot Advance Market Commitment for pneumococcal vaccines. The All-Party Parliamentary Group will run alongside PneumoADIP – a programme based at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore, USA, and funded by the GAVI Alliance – and will work in tandem with the Pneumo Medical Advisory Panel , a panel comprising world-leading public health clinicians and immunologists.
